Unmasking the Risks: E-cigarette Usage and Its Perils on Health

In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a concerning surge in the popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). Despite misconceptions suggesting their safety compared to traditional cigarettes, experts warn that these devices pose significant risks, potentially leading to respiratory, oral, and brain-related health issues.

The Deceptive Allure of E-cigarettes

Contrary to common belief, e-cigarettes are not a safer alternative to traditional smoking. Dr. Malik Riaz Khan, Principal Medical Officer at Nowshera’s government hospital Pabbi, highlights the alarming threat these devices pose. Regular use of e-cigarettes has been linked to the development of fatal conditions, including lung, oral, and mouth cancers.

Unveiling the Statistics

Citing reports, Dr. Khan reveals that approximately 6.2% of the population engages in vaping or using e-cigarettes, while 15.9 million individuals (12.4%) resort to smokeless tobacco. The statistics underscore the urgency of addressing the growing prevalence of alternative tobacco products.

A Call to Vigilance

In response to the escalating e-cigarette trend, organizations like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Blue Veins and the Provincial Alliance for Sustainable Tobacco Control advocate for heightened vigilance. Sana Ahmad, Program Coordinator of Blue Veins, emphasizes the need for governments and civil society organizations to remain proactive against third parties aligned with the tobacco industry.

The Nicotine Menace

E-cigarettes often contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance with adverse effects on heart rate, blood pressure, and brain function. Young adults, especially college and university students, may unknowingly expose themselves to long-term health risks, including serious lung diseases, nicotine addiction, depression, and anxiety.

The Medical Perspective

Dr. Qazi Shahbaz, Chairman of the Provincial Doctors Association, underscores the importance of safeguarding public health. Inhaling e-cigarette vapors can lead to respiratory problems, with reported cases of severe lung injuries associated with vaping. Dr. Shahbaz stresses the need for a comprehensive plan at a higher level to prevent the proliferation of e-cigarettes.

Urgent Plea for Action

Recognizing the imminent risks, the Provincial Alliance for Sustainable Tobacco Control KP calls for an immediate ban on vapes and e-cigarettes in Pakistan. Aligning policies with World Health Organization (WHO) directives, the alliance urges governments to treat e-cigarettes similarly to traditional tobacco products and enforce a complete ban for the well-being of future generations.

Proactive Measures in KP

In response to the growing threat, KP has taken significant steps, imposing section 144 to ban the storage, sale, and use of e-cigarettes and vapes to minors. The province also prohibits such activities within a 50-meter radius of educational institutions. These measures aim to curb the increasing use of e-cigarettes, particularly among children and youth.

In conclusion, the burgeoning popularity of e-cigarettes in Pakistan necessitates swift and decisive action. By dispelling myths, advocating for comprehensive policies, and implementing stringent regulations, we can safeguard public health and protect the well-being of future generations.
