In a recent economic forum at Stanford University, Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, sparked discussions by asserting that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could become a reality within a remarkably short span of five years. Currently, AI demonstrates proficiency in certain domains, such as passing legal bar exams, but faces challenges in others, notably specialized medical tests like gastroenterology. However, Huang expressed confidence that within the speculated five-year timeframe, AI would conquer these hurdles as well.

“Therefore, it’s hard to achieve as an engineer,” Huang remarked, emphasizing the necessity of clearly defined objectives in engineering endeavors.

Addressing concerns about the infrastructure required to support the burgeoning AI industry, particularly in terms of semiconductor fabrication facilities (“fabs”), Huang acknowledged the necessity for more fabs. However, he underscored that advancements in chip technology would mitigate the demand for a vast number of fabs.

“We’re going to need more fabs. However, remember that we’re also improving the algorithms and the processing of (AI) tremendously over time,” Huang elucidated. “It’s not as if the efficiency of computing is what it is today, and therefore the demand is this much. I’m improving computing by a million times over 10 years.”
